DPE (Designated Pilot Examiner)
Definition
An FAA-designated individual authorized to conduct practical tests (checkrides) for pilot certificates and ratings. DPEs charge their own fees and maintain their own schedules.
Why It Matters
DPE availability is often a bottleneck for students ready for their checkride. Schools that maintain good DPE relationships and can schedule checkrides efficiently have a competitive advantage in student completion rates.
